KENDRICK Racing had a hectic Melbourne Cup Day with nine starters at four venues, including a runner at Flemington.

Thief Of Hearts led well into the straight before being swamped late in the #FlemingtonFling 3YO (1000m) to finish midfield.

"It was great to have a runner at Flemington on Cup Day,'' said trainer Stuart Kendrick.

"It was just a shame the result didn't go our way,'' he said.

Kendrick Racing fared better back in Queensland with many of its eight other Cup Day runners finishing in the money, including a win to Zellaro at the Sunshine Coast.

Ridden by Damian Browne, Zellaro ($1.90-fav) romped home by more than three lengths in a Class 4 (1600m).

"It was great to see him back in top form,'' said Kendrick.

"He'd been running consistently this time in without winning,'' he said.

"We made a few changes after his last start and it is good to see him back in winning form."

Kendrick Racing's other Sunshine Coast runners on Melbourne Cup Day included Kariega, second in a Maiden (1300m), Menacing , second in a Class 3-SW (100m), and Oratry, third in a F&M Class 1 (1200m).

Zellaro is a Darby Racing-syndicated  galloper and they went close to a double when Imperil was just edged out in a Class 3-SW (1350m) at Doomben.

"Both Kariega and Imperil were beaten centimetres,'' Kendrick said.

The stable's other Doomben runner included Spur Le Joeur, another Darby Racing runner, third in a 3YO (1350m), and Mosscat, fourth in a 0-70 Handicap (1200m).

The ninth runner for the day, Set Piece, finished unplaced at the Gold Coast.

"Full credit to our staff,'' said Kendrick.

"We were down at Flemington with Thief Of Hearts and they were kept extremely busy with all our other runners."
