JET Spur four-year-old Nighthawk didn't look like a horse that had been off the scene for 15 months when he swooped first-up at the Sunshine Coast.

Ridden by Damian Browne, Nighthawk ($1.85-fav) won comfortably by nearly two lengths in a Maiden (1000m) on Sunday, October 9.

Trainer Stuart Kendrick said it had been a "bit of a process" with the Darby Racing-syndicated horse.

"He's had a few injury issues,'' Kendrick said.

"He had a knee chip taken out. He was also very immature early days,'' he said.

"But he's been going really well. He's been working well.

"It was great to see him do that."

Nighthawk did lose ground soon after the start but Browne managed to recover and find a good spot on the fence just off the pace.

"His head went up but having Brownie on, he didn't panic," Kendrick said.

"He just followed them up."
