PROMISING stayer in the making Pierre Bizel has conquered a mile at only his third career start and is now eying a 2000m metropolitan assignment.
"I half earmarked if he won today we might have a crack at that 2000 metres three-year-old heat in a couple of weeks time at Doomben,'' trainer Stuart Kendrick said after the Sebring gelding won a Class 1 (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, November 25.
There were some anxious moments early when the horse was taken on in front and they looked to be going too hard, with a big gap back to the rest of the field.
"I was a bit worried when they were seven or eight in front and the inside horse just wanted to keep pushing ... At least it dropped off us and gave us a little bit of a breather,'' Kendrick said.
Ridden by Damian Browne, Pierre Bizel ($1.75) got a little leg weary over the concluding stages as the early pace took its toll but still won comfortably by a length.
Kendrick said the horse also pricked it ears at the 200m mark, thinking the race was over.
"He's like a big kid,'' he said.
"I think he might make a good horse when the penny drops."
