THERE is one thing better than winning a two-year-old race with a first starter.
And that is saddling up the quinella with two debutants.
Deep Field two-year-old Chevy Nova took home the major share of prizemoney in a QTIS 2YO Maiden (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, April 7.
But his stablemate Eric the Eel lost no admirers after his barnstorming finish just failed to peg back Chevy Nova, going down by a head.
Chevy Nova ($12), ridden by Ryan Wiggins, overcame a wide gate. leading all the way to win.
"It was great to see him scorch across from the outside alley and win on debut," Kendrick said.
"Eric the Eel also made up an incredible amount of ground late,'' he said.
"They are two impressive types for the future."
Eric the Eel started $4 favourite in the race on the strength of a good second in a recent trial.
Chevy Nova had finished fourth in a trial on the same day and Kendrick revealed post-race that the horse had shown even more on the track since then.
"I put blinkers on him and he won a jump-out in good style, spearing to the lead and holding on in the straight, much like he did on debut today" he said.
