IT is always nice for connections to cheer home a winner on Melbourne Cup day.

The Administrator ensured his owners and Kendrick Racing could celebrate a little more on Cup day, winning a CG&E Class 2 (1300m) at Eagle Farm.

Ridden by Matthew McGillivray, The Administrator ($7) broke through at his third run back from a spell.

McGillivray punched the six-year-old forward from a wide gate and he sat in second before hitting the lead in the straight and kicking strongly to the line to win by one-and-a-half lengths.

"It was a tremendous ride and a great run by the horse,'' said trainer Stuart Kendrick.

"He really appreciated getting up a bit in trip to 1300 metres,'' he said.

The lightly raced gelding now has three wins and seven placings from 18 career starts for more than $75,000 in prize money.
