Trainer Stuart Kendrick pulled the right reign with a gear change for Dark Archer.
The addition of blinkers did the trick, with the Golden Archer three-year-old breaking through at his fifth career start.
Ridden by Mark Du Plessis, Dark Archer ($4.40) came with a sustained run from just off the speed to win a Maiden (1400m) by a quarter of a length.
It was his second run back from a spell and he improved sharply on his fist-up effort.
"We put blinkers on him to get him to concentrate,'' said Kendrick.
"He was bred by Glen and Lisa Morton,'' he said.
"He's a half-brother to Buffy."
